Welcome to Amazon Light 4.0, an alternate interface to Amazon.com.
Primarily using Amazon.com's Web Services API, Amazon Light 4.0 is an exercise in tying together various Web Services into a whole, adding content, context and some useful tools to the Amazon shopping/browsing experience.
When viewing an item's Information Page, you'll see links in the left column, some links in the middle of the page, and a suite of tools (buttons) on the top-right side. Using these tools, one can:
- Buy the item from Amazon.com (of course) - using any Amazon Associate ID you choose
- Add the item to an Amazon.com Wishlist
- Send URL to a friend with GMail.
Why GMail? No server-side mail-sender will allow you as much flexibility in the message as Gmail will - plus you have a record of mails sent in your "sent mail" box. GMail is a beta application offered by Google.com, accounts are given out by invitation only, but have become fairly easier to get recently. If you do not have a GMail account and would like one, there are a few services like iSnoop to help you find a willing inviter.
- Set up a DropCash Campaign.
What is Dropcash? It's a simple way to set up a goal dollar amount, give it a title, a description, and best, a URL that the whole world can see and use to donate or track the progress. Dropcash uses the TypeKey authentication service and PayPal for transactions.
- Send URL and Title to your Blog on Blogger.
Have a blog? If not, Blogger is a free service, offering easy-to-use tools to build and maintain a weblog of your very own.
- Send URL and Title to your Del.Icio.Us Account.
What is Del.icio.us? It's a simple, useful social Bookmarks Manager. If you're really interested, see the site, or its "about" page.
- Lookup a book at your Local Library
Based on Jon Udell's excellent "LibraryLookup" bookmarklet, this is a service that allows you to choose your own local library and look up a book aat that library from any Book Detail page on Amazon Light 4. (I have noticed some library URLs are out of date - corrections are welcome.
- Google Print Excerpts - If a book happens to have an excerpt on Google Print, a link to that excerpt is included in the description. (Example here). There aren't a ton of books included by Google Print at this time, but the ones that are have generous excerpts.
- Wishlists - Search for a person's wishlist by email or name. Samples: Jeff Bezos (there are four!), or jeff@amazon.com (only one)
- GiftLists - Based on a given wishlist, a list of suggested gifts. Example: Jeff Bezos
- Relevant Links (from Yahoo & Google) - Related News and Websites (not ads)
- Subcategory Filtering - narrow your search from "DVD" to "DVD/animation"
- Settings - Choose an Associate ID, a Library near you, and more
