A detail of a map made by Lt. Schwatka of the U.S., just prior to the gold rush. The stampeders landed at the head of the Chilkoot Inlet (on the lower right of the map), near an old Mission that became Skagway. They followed Schwatka's map across what appeared to be a passable trail -- using lakes and rivers mostly -- northwest toward Ft. Yukon. The Bonanza Gold strike occurred just south of Ft. Yukon, near what is labeled as the "Tohkundik" River, later called the "Trondiuk", and then the "Klondike".
