The RCMP, or Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Known as "Mounties", these lawmen of the Canadian North maintained a level of civility, safety and sanity in an otherwise lawless environment. Their uniform coats were bright red, and the dress code as strict as any army. The Mounties became the symbols of bravery and authority in the eyes of the watching world as it created the mythology that came to surround the entire Gold Rush.
