Looking down from the top of Chilkoot Pass. The dark line of men climbing the "Golden Staircase" has come to visually represent the entire mad dash to the Klondike. Some of the ruts dug into the snow in the foreground are sliding paths cut by prospectors. After hauling what they could carry to the top, some slid on their backside to the bottom, using an ice-pick to steer. Packers had to make between 10 and 20 trips back and forth to bring all of their necessary cargo.
