On December 14th, 2005, Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong will be released. The studio behind the film (and the whole Kong franchise) is Universal studios, which has been somewhat overzealous in recent years to go for every tie-in and merchandising dollar (even as I documented earlier for The Cat in the Hat and The Hulk). With Kong, they've pulled back a trifle*, but there are still amazing amounts of Kong-related stuff out there, with more to come.

Major partners include Volkswagen, Toshiba, Burger King, Nestle, Kellogg's, Chase bank, the City of New York, Pringles, and the New Zealand Post.

Here's a (hulking, gargantuan, massive, giant, monstrous, umm... large sampling (as of 11/14/05)

Basic Links:

Some Tidbits:
  • Peter Jackson was paid $20 million (against 20 percent of the gross proceeds) to direct (and co-produce and write) this film, the highest salary ever paid to a film director in advance of production.
  • Jackson stands to earn as much from sales of the Ubisoft Kong Videogame
  • 1933 version cost (in todays dollars) $8.8 million
  • 1976 remake cost (in todays dollars) $82 million
  • 2005 version cost: $207 million (original budget: $175 million)

* In the past, Universal Products Group appeared rather proud of the sheer number of deals they had put together - as many as 300 licensees for The Hulk. Apparently that attitude has created some backlash, and so they've scaled back a tiny bit in the number of partners.

Some pertinent Quotes/Facts:

  • Kellogg's will offer King Kong packaging on 18 million units of breakfast cereal
  • Nestle's campaign will include King Kong packaging graphics featured on more than 10 million units of the company's top-selling candy bars
  • Volkswagen's worldwide King Kong promotions will expand in November with television, print, outdoor and online campaigns as well as in-store displays at Volkswagen dealerships, sweepstakes and giveaways.
  • "Movie fans with king-sized appetites can expect big things at Burger King locations worldwide when we bring the larger-than-life world of 'King Kong' off-screen and into our (7,500) restaurants," said Brian Gies, Vice President, Marketing Impact, Burger King Corporation.
  • "This isn't Curious George, so we didn't want to be in every aisle, just adding to the noise at holiday time" - Stephanie Sperber, EVP of Universal Studios Partnerships
  • "One of the things we heard from our partners was that they want a less cluttered field," - Stephanie Sperber
  • "We try to remain less cluttered than we have on other major tent-pole films, so we stress quality over quantity. The era of a film with 20 promotional partners is over because that doesn't serve a brand's needs" - Stephanie Sperber
  • Dec. 5, 2005 - NYC Premiere of King Kong to 8,000 moviegoers on 38 screens in a pair of 42nd Street theaters.
