Sitka has a long Russian Heritage. It was here that Russia officially handed over Alaska to the US in 1867. About a mile from this spot is a historic battleground, where the Russians shelled the Tlingit (natives) from sea in 1804. The winds were slack, so they commanded an enemy tribe of natives, to tow their 19th century battleship with over 100 stone-age kayaks. I walked through the site and tried to imagine the shelling. Most escaped into the forest, but some children were killed. |
